Responding to a large increase in arrivals from New Zealand, Tourism Malaysia has recently opened a tourism office in Auckland, New Zealand. Arrivals from New Zealand rose by 47% year on year from April to June and Tourism Malaysia is hoping to capitalise on this to establish Malaysia as a destination of choice for tourists from New Zealand. Easier accessibility over the years with the launch of low cost carriers such as JetStar from Auckland and AirAsia from Christchurch to Kuala Lumpur and a favourable exchange rate have made Malaysia attractive to New Zealand holidaymakers, despite continual competition from more traditional 'Kiwi' holidays destinations such as Australia and the Pacific Islands. Tourism Malaysia aims to strengthen its promotional and marketing efforts with airline partners, tour operators and key industry players to promote tourism in Malaysia to New Zealanders.

The Raffles Hotel Le Royal, Phnom Penh and the Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor, Siem Reap are currently undergoing a refurbishment, which is scheduled to be completed by November 2011. Opened in 1929 and 1932, respectively, these two hotels entered the Raffles portfolio in 1997 and are the only luxury hotels in Cambodia that pre-date the civil war and the Khmer Rouge era. In a nod to both buildings' French architecture, both hotels will undergo an update of selected guestrooms, suites, villas, meetings rooms and the hotel lobby of the Raffles Hotel Le Royal, which will incorporate French Colonial, Art Deco and Khmer elements. Luxurious Cambodian silks, Khmer patterns, Art Deco colours, silverwork and wood craving done by local artists will be prominently featured in both Raffles' properties. Both properties have plans to refurbish more rooms in 2012. |
