HVS Announces the Appointment of Hospitality Industry Veteran Kirby Payne To its Board of Directors

Kirby Payne Appointed Board of Directors

Steve Rushmore, President and Founder of HVS, the leading global hospitality services and consulting firm has announced the addition of Kirby Payne, CHA to its Board of Directors, effective immediately. Payne, who heads the HVS/American Hospitality Management Company division of HVS, and once served as Chairman of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, brings a wealth of background and experience to the Board. The Board of Directors is responsible for developing global initiatives and policies, while making strategic decisions affecting the entire HVS organization.

Payne literally lived in hotels until the age of 13. His father was night auditor in Seattle at one of the five original Western Hotels (now Westin) and then General Manager of InterContinental’s first hotel, which was in Brazil on the Amazon River. At age 11, Payne moved to the Dominican Republic when his father was transferred as General Manager to an InterContinental Hotel in Santo Domingo, followed by roles in the Bahamas, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico – all before the age of 18!

Prior to his senior year of college, Payne served for three years in the US Army, where he was assigned as an advisor to Vietnamese army combat units. Among is awards are the Air Medal and the Vietnamese Medal of Honor 2nd Class. Upon graduation from the Hotel School at Florida State, he too went to work for InterContinental as a management trainee in Curacao.

Payne’s career included a wide-spectrum of hotel-related accomplishments including several years in the hotel consulting departments at the accounting firms, then known as Laventhol, Krekstein, Horwath & Horwath and Harris, Kerr Forster, as well a Regional Supervisor for Hilton Hotels’ franchise division. Payne later ran operations for a Mexican hotel company and managed a luxury resort in the Caribbean. His hotel management accomplishments include running a hotel of 1,100 rooms as well as running an operation of 35 hotels at one time.

In 1988, Payne formed American Hospitality Management Company. In 2004, it was welcomed into the HVS family as HVS/American Hospitality Management Company, which focuses on hotel management and operational consulting. The entity manages hotels for individuals, investment groups as well as lending institutions. The company is also Asset Manager for several very well known boutique and resort hotels, undertakes operational assessments for owners of first-class and deluxe hotels and performs expert witness assignments.

“Kirby embraces the vision of HVS,” explains Rushmore. “Instead of replacing existing Board members, the Board decided to increase its size by one member. The Board felt that Kirby’s background and experience would bring a new dimension to the Board’s decision making process.”
