Rockville, Md. (April 30, 2008) – HVScompass Interior Design, a leading hospitality interior design firm, announced today the completed custom interior design of the historic George Washington Hotel in downtown Winchester, Virginia. This total interior restoration project consisted of a new lobby, restaurant, bar, guestrooms, ballroom and meeting spaces.
Built in 1924, the George Washington Hotel has 90 custom-designed guestrooms and 6,000 square feet of meeting space and is registered as a historical landmark. HVScompass’ design integrates today’s modern elegance while preserving the hotel’s historic charm.
In the lobby, designers retained and refurbished the lobby’s original front desk, marble flooring, and interior entryway light fixture. To provide a dramatic, contemporary look, the designers incorporated dark wood floors and dark ceilings into the lobby bar adjacent to the lobby. The semi-circular bar features custom-designed millwork. The lobby walls are adorned with custom murals by a local artist and intricate collages featuring a mixture of historical artifacts and photographs.
The design of the hotel’s restaurant, The Dancing Goat, is based on the work of Spanish artist Antoni Gaudi. His use of free form and bright color inspired the restaurant’s Spanish/Mediterranean feel with vibrant, yellow walls and organic lighting. A large exhibition window in the restaurant encourages diners to peek into the inner workings of the kitchen. A custom exterior entry sign designed by the team draws passersby into The Dancing Goat.
The guestroom design is a high-end, modern take on the traditional, blending history with today’s amenities. The 10 executive suites contain hardwood floors, Jacuzzi showers, and marble throughout the bathroom. In the ballroom, the designers retained the original plaster molding, which features detailed imagery, and accented it with gold. The pool area was redesigned to replicate the ancient Roman baths.
“The redesign of the George Washington Hotel is a great example of our designers’ abilities to incorporate the past with the present,” said Jonathan C. Nehmer, AIA, ISHC, principal of HVScompass. “The two come together and create a sophisticated design that retains an old-fashioned quality.”
After more than three years of renovation, The George Washington Hotel officially re-opened for business today. It is part of Wyndham Hotels and Resorts and is operated by CB Hotels.
